In his debut novel, Amor Towles tells the story of a young woman navigating 1950s New York. The beginning and middle are impressively captivating, but I found the ending clichéd—more like something from a romance novel of the 1980s.

Still, it’s beautifully written and thoroughly enjoyable. Just be prepared for a bittersweet finish, something from a romance novel of the 1980s.
